Blind Faith is Stupid Faith

I remember, as a kid, asking questions about God and the Christian faith only to be met with a subtle rebuke of, “You jus’ gotta take it on faith.” I remember how defeating it was to my, already struggling, faith. I remember looking at the secular world, who had answers for everything, and wondering why no one could give a “reason for the hope”(1 peter 3:15) that was in them.

"'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me." - John 6:45

As I have gotten older and, hopefully, wiser through the years, I have discovered the alarming truth. People are walking and living in blind faith. I say to you, if this is the case in your live, BLIND FAITH IS STUPID FAITH. It is dangerous to follow someone just because they are energetic or charismatic and can throw around a few inspirational sayings.

None of our beloved biblical heroes operated in the blind faith that so many “Christians” today operate in:

Noah – Had God speak to him directly.

“By faith Noah, being warned by God, in reverent fear, built an ark for the saving of his household…” - Hebrews 11:7

Moses – Stumbles upon a burning bush (Exodus 3)

Paul – Encounters Christ in person and is physically blinded by his glory (Acts 9)

David – Before he faces Goliath, has already been given a victory over a lion and a bear, as a kid (1 Samuel 17:34-36)

Peter – Waited on Christ to speak and then call him specifically before he got out of the boat to walk on water (Matthew 14:22-33)

In every instance, it was not faith that came first, rather, the work or act of God.

The man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5 did nothing in the way of faith. Jesus came to him. Jesus spoke to him. Jesus healed him.

The disciples did not run to Jesus in their great faith. He came to each of them. He called them. He even said to them, “You did not choose me, but I chose you…” -John 15:16

Blind faith is what brings people to give their life-savings to some tv preacher so he can buy his third private jet for $73 million, or to drink Kool-Aid on some compound until they and their children are dead. Blind faith dismisses active pursuit of truth for an easy answer. Blind faith is lazy faith. That’s why so many dwell in it – because it’s easier to say, “just take it on faith,” than to take the time to think, process, to really study to show yourself approved as Paul instructed Timothy in the second chapter of his second letter.

Rather than hoping with no reason, take time to look at all of the reasons to believe and hope and trust in Christ. Look to those in whom Christ dwells richly. Look to creation which sings out of a Divine Creator. Look to a God-breathed word that gives you understanding of the character, nature, and even will of the one true God! Don't have stupid faith. God gives plenty of reason to trust in Him, to hope in Him. He needs no persuasive language or gimmicks of men. Trust in God because he has drawn you and taught you!

HOW do i SAY THIS GENTLY:

My name is Adam Casey. I am a counselor at a faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in North Alabama. Day after day, for hours at a time, I am sitting with men who have seen (and done) some terrible things. Through these counseling sessions, personal struggles, and teaching classes on how Christ is the answer to recovery and reconciliation, many revelatory epiphanies have emerged. All of which are what inspire this blog. I am fully aware of my depravity and certain ability for flaw so make sure to test everything you read here with the word of God. Also, feel free to  write and respond. I love your feedback.
