Quit Trying Not to Sin

Are you exhausted from your daily struggle to quit smoking, drinking, cursing, etc.? Maybe the problem is not that smoking is bad. Maybe the problem doesn't lie in the scotch bottle. What if the cure you've been looking for is so easy that all of your efforts have been in vain. Read on to find a guaranteed means to rid yourself of your vices. What if I told you the answer was to quit trying?!

We are constantly worn down from continually working to improve ourselves. We try and try to give up something only to give in and spend the next three days hating ourselves for failing. In this article, I intend to show you a foolproof way to succeed. The only way, in fact, to find success. Sure, you can find people who have quit things using only their hard work and will power, but those same people are worn out each moment as they struggle to NOT do something. Their thoughts constantly on NOT doing whatever they have quit.

But there is an easier way. A better way. A joy-filled way that will give meaning and purpose. Not only will you no longer struggle with whatever your vice may be, but you will have more quality of life! At this point you may be skeptical. Possibly, you are reading this as you would a paid ad that pops up on your screen, promising a miracle cure "for just three easy payments..."

But this is a proven solution that I have personally seen work in many men trying to give up a drug or alcohol addiction. The solution is so simple that many will roll their eyes and ignore it, and miss out on deliverance. This was the case for a man named Naaman, found in the book of 2 Kings in the Bible. In chapter 5 we meet this commander of the Syrian army who has contracted leprosy. He gathers up his great wealth and sets out to implore the prophet Elisha to restore his health. He is prepared to pay a great price and do any strenuous tasks asked of him to be cured of his disease. But when Elisha told him to merely go and wash in a nearby river and he would be healed, Naaman was angry and yelled at him. Naaman wanted a special concoction or incantation or ceremony that would make him feel as though he had earned or caused this cure; that he could be in control of his restoration. Naaman was healed, though. Once his servants convinced him to lay aside his pride and do the simple task he was instructed to carry out, he was healed.

So it is with defeating our struggles, addictions and vices. We need only to quit trying to quit!

See, when you are trying to quit drinking, you likely are reminding yourself not to drink. This serves only to keep alcohol in your thoughts. If you continue to say, "stop drinking, stop drinking, stop drinking," guess what is consuming your thoughts - DRINKING! No, the solution is found in Colossians 3:2:

Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.

Also, Matthew 6:33 says it just as clearly and even has the power to answer all of your other questions as well.

Want to know who you should marry? Matthew 6:33 is the answer

Want to know where you should work? Matthew 6:33 can direct you

How bout where you should live or the financial decisions you should make? You guessed it, Matthew 6:33!

So what does this magical verse say? Have you already looked it up? I'll post it here just in case:

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

The solution to no longer going back to our sins is not to focus on quitting them, rather that we should set our mind on things above. Don't look back. Don't concentrate on earthly things. Look forward to life and purpose found in delighting in God and His riches!

HOW do i SAY THIS GENTLY:

My name is Adam Casey. I am a counselor at a faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in North Alabama. Day after day, for hours at a time, I am sitting with men who have seen (and done) some terrible things. Through these counseling sessions, personal struggles, and teaching classes on how Christ is the answer to recovery and reconciliation, many revelatory epiphanies have emerged. All of which are what inspire this blog. I am fully aware of my depravity and certain ability for flaw so make sure to test everything you read here with the word of God. Also, feel free to  write and respond. I love your feedback.
